Delaware Bay Inlet

The inlet in front of Block 7 is almost enclosed by Cable Bay beach, Pepin Island and Maori Pa Beach, with a small exit between Pepin Island & the beach.

The inlet is very tidal with constantly changing views and birdlife. It's a great place for kayaking at higher water.

This map shows the layout of the inlet.

Why the names?

  • Delaware Bay - is named after the Delaware, a vessel that was wrecked in the bay.
  • Pepin Island - was named by Dumont d'Urville.
  • Cable Bay - this is the place in NZ where telegraph cables were laid to from Australia

The Maori names are translated as following;

  • Rotokura - a red glow on the water (sunset)
  • Mahepuku (Mahe-i-puku) - A rounded sinker
  • Huri-o-te wai - Dividing of the water
  • Tuarawhati - Broken back
